Raised or lowered?

Superscript (ᵗⁱⁿʸ) sits above the baseline. Unicode has a nearly complete lowercase alphabet here, plus digits and a few symbols, so most words convert cleanly.

Subscript (ₜᵢₙᵧ) sits below. Coverage is much thinner — Unicode only ever added the letters chemists and mathematicians needed, so several letters have no subscript form and stay full size.

Expect gaps. In superscript, only lowercase q is missing. In subscript, roughly half the alphabet is unavailable, so short words with common letters work best.

Why these characters exist

They were not created for aesthetics. Superscript and subscript digits are needed for exponents and chemical formulas — x² and H₂O. The letters were added mostly for phonetic notation and for mathematical and chemical variables.

Because Unicode only encoded the characters that had a genuine technical need, the alphabet is incomplete. There was never a plan for a full miniature typeface, which is why every tiny text generator leaves a few letters at normal size.

Good uses for miniature text

  • Bio subtitles — a normal name with a tiny tagline underneath is a clean two-line profile.
  • Asides and footnotes — a quiet remark that does not compete with the main line.
  • Units and labels — km², H₂O and similar without any formatting.
  • Quiet disclaimers — the visual joke of fine print.
  • Ranking and level markers beside a username.

It is small by definition, so anything important should not be in tiny text — on a phone it can be genuinely hard to read.

Things to know before you commit

The trade-offs worth knowing

  • Search engines and site search may not match it. To a computer, 𝓱𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓸 is not the word hello. Keep your searchable text plain.
  • Screen readers handle it badly. Many announce the characters one by one or skip them, so avoid styling text that carries important information.
  • Some fonts lack the glyphs. Where a device has no glyph you get a box (□). Coverage is very good on modern phones and desktops, weaker on older devices and some smart TVs.
  • A few platforms filter it from names. Facebook and some games restrict which characters may appear in a real-name field.

None of that matters for a bio, a caption or a username. All of it matters for body text, headings on your own website, or anything you want found in search.
