What blackletter actually is
Blackletter — also called Gothic script or Fraktur — was the standard writing style across western Europe from roughly the twelfth century until the Renaissance. Gutenberg's Bible was set in it. Its dense, angular strokes were partly an economy measure: tight letterforms fitted more words onto expensive parchment.
It survived longest in German printing, remaining common well into the twentieth century, which is why Unicode calls the block Fraktur after the German variety. Today it carries three strong associations: medieval manuscripts, newspaper mastheads, and metal band logos.
Regular or bold?
Bold Blackletter (𝕲𝖔𝖙𝖍𝖎𝖈) is the one to reach for. The heavier strokes hold together at small sizes and give you the full dramatic weight people expect from the style.
Regular Blackletter (𝔊𝔬𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔠) is finer and more historically accurate to printed Fraktur. It looks superb large, but the thin strokes can break up in a mobile comment.

It is a display style. One word or a short line lands; a paragraph is close to unreadable.
Things to know before you commit
The trade-offs worth knowing
- Search engines and site search may not match it. To a computer, 𝓱𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓸 is not the word hello. Keep your searchable text plain.
- Screen readers handle it badly. Many announce the characters one by one or skip them, so avoid styling text that carries important information.
- Some fonts lack the glyphs. Where a device has no glyph you get a box (□). Coverage is very good on modern phones and desktops, weaker on older devices and some smart TVs.
- A few platforms filter it from names. Facebook and some games restrict which characters may appear in a real-name field.
None of that matters for a bio, a caption or a username. All of it matters for body text, headings on your own website, or anything you want found in search.

It is useful for previewing wording and layout, but a tattoo artist will work from a proper lettering design rather than a Unicode screenshot.
Is there a numbers version?
