Sans bold or serif bold?
Sans Bold (𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱) matches the interface font of nearly every app and social platform, so it looks like genuine bold formatting rather than a decorative swap. This is the default choice.
Serif Bold (𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝) has traditional bracketed serifs. It stands out more, which is useful when you want the styling to be noticed as styling.
Both include bold digits, which many other Unicode styles do not — handy for prices, dates and stats.
Why not just use markdown?
Where real formatting is available, use it. Discord's **bold**, Slack's, Reddit's and WhatsApp's *bold* all produce proper bold text that screen readers announce correctly and search engines can index.
Unicode bold is for the many places with no formatting at all: Instagram bios and captions, TikTok profiles, X display names, YouTube titles, LinkedIn headlines, form fields and plain-text notes. In those places it is the only way to get emphasis.

Using emphasis well
- Bold the first two or three words of a long caption so the preview line carries the hook.
- Bold one number. A single 𝟯𝟬% in plain text is far more effective than a bold sentence.
- Use it for labels — 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻: Friday 8pm — in an event post.
- Do not bold everything. Emphasis is relative; when it is all bold, none of it is.
Things to know before you commit
The trade-offs worth knowing
- Search engines and site search may not match it. To a computer, 𝓱𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓸 is not the word hello. Keep your searchable text plain.
- Screen readers handle it badly. Many announce the characters one by one or skip them, so avoid styling text that carries important information.
- Some fonts lack the glyphs. Where a device has no glyph you get a box (□). Coverage is very good on modern phones and desktops, weaker on older devices and some smart TVs.
- A few platforms filter it from names. Facebook and some games restrict which characters may appear in a real-name field.
None of that matters for a bio, a caption or a username. All of it matters for body text, headings on your own website, or anything you want found in search.
