Which italic to use
Sans Italic (𝘐𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤) blends with app interfaces and reads as a genuine italic. Best default.
Serif Italic (𝐼𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑐) is the mathematical variable style — a bit more calligraphic and more obviously decorative.
Bold Italic combines both when a subtle slant is not enough.
What italics are for
Typographic convention gives italics four jobs, and they still apply on social media:
- Titles of works — books, films, albums, ships.
- Emphasis — a word you would stress if you were speaking.
- Foreign words — terms not yet naturalised into English.
- Inner voice or asides — a thought rather than speech, which is why fiction writers lean on it.
Using italics for one of these reads as deliberate. Using them for whole paragraphs reads as an accident.
How it works
Why this is not really a font
Nothing here installs or downloads a font. These are separate Unicode characters that happen to look like styled versions of the Latin alphabet. Most of them live in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, added so that a mathematician could write a bold vector and an italic variable and have the distinction survive in plain text.
Because they are characters rather than formatting, they travel anywhere text travels — including places that strip formatting entirely, like an Instagram bio or a Discord nickname. That is the whole trick.

Things to know before you commit
The trade-offs worth knowing
- Search engines and site search may not match it. To a computer, 𝓱𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓸 is not the word hello. Keep your searchable text plain.
- Screen readers handle it badly. Many announce the characters one by one or skip them, so avoid styling text that carries important information.
- Some fonts lack the glyphs. Where a device has no glyph you get a box (□). Coverage is very good on modern phones and desktops, weaker on older devices and some smart TVs.
- A few platforms filter it from names. Facebook and some games restrict which characters may appear in a real-name field.
None of that matters for a bio, a caption or a username. All of it matters for body text, headings on your own website, or anything you want found in search.

How do I write in italics on Instagram?

Is this real italic formatting?
No — these are separate Unicode characters that are drawn slanted. That is precisely why they work in fields with no formatting.
Why does the letter h look different?
In the serif italic set, lowercase h is borrowed from another Unicode block. Use Sans Italic to avoid it entirely.
Are there italic numbers?
Unicode has no italic digits, so numbers stay in your normal font. Sans Bold includes bold digits if you need styled numerals.
Does italic text work in Discord?
Yes, though Discord also supports markdown — wrapping text in asterisks gives proper italics that screen readers handle better.
Can I combine italic with bold?
Yes, the Bold Italic styles above are single characters that carry both attributes.
